We are Fabrizio and Michele Ruta.
We rescued Esmerelda, our dog and company namesake in 2006 from the streets of Phladelphia; she was a young and healthy one year old Boxer/Boston Terrier mix and we saw an energy and athleticism in Esmerelda that we wanted to see thrive.
In 2007, too many pets and pet owners in the US became the sad victims of a pet food crisis that exposed many manufacturers of commercial dog food for their use of contaminated substandard ingredients that are harmful to pets and humans when not contaminated! We knew that we should investigate the food we were feeding Ezzie, and we came to the conclusion that there were so few dog food companies that were untouched by the crisis; especially disturbing were the companies who were making "premium food" and even prescription food were ending up on contaminated food lists.
After the let down by the big dog food makers, our eyes were opened to the "not safe for human consumption" list of ingredients in almost all commercial kibble and canned food. We decided to start making a well-balanced, nutritional and preservative-free dog food. We did a lot of research and we spoke to our vet while we were developing and working on Esmerelda's Dog Grub(TM) recipe.
Esmerelda has a perfect bill of health from her vets--and as a matter of fact, her last checkup was in November 2011, at Queen Village Animal Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, and Ezzie's vets feel she is getting a very balanced diet and is in great health!
